The European Organisation for Astronomical Research in the Southern Hemisphere (ESO) is an intergovernmental European organisation for astronomical research. It has thirteen member countries. ESO operates astronomical observatories in Chile and has its headquarters in Garching, near Munich, Germany. The aim of ESO Educational Office is to provide support in astronomy and astrophysics education, especially at the high-school level. This includes teaching materials, courses for teachers and specific educational projects.
The European Association for Astronomy Education (EAAE) is the first all-European network for teachers interested in Astronomy. The EAAE-Working Group Summer School (EAAE-WGSS) has organised each year a Summer School since 1997.
Both institutions, ESO and EAAE, organise the 2nd ESO-EAAE Summer School in order to offer teachers access to specific research, to new educational materials and methods and the chance to exchange experiences. This Summer School is open to all secondary school teachers who work in European countries.

The 2nd ESO-EAAE Summer School will take place on July 4th - 9th and will be held in Granada (Spain) with the cooperation of Instituto Astrofísico de Andalucía IAA and Granada University. At this event several different kinds of activities will be presented by professional astronomers from ESO and IAA and university professors and secondary school teachers members of EAAE-WGSS. The Summer School is for school teachers interested in astronomy even if they only have limited knowledge in this field. The Summer School is not aimed at experts. The preliminary theme of this Summer School is " Teaching Astronomy at the beginning of the 21st century". The aim of the organisers is to promote very active participation and the exchange of ideas. General information will be available through the web of ESO-EAAE Summer School http://www.eaae-astro.org
General Lectures (GL) will be presented by ESO and IAA astronomers.
General Working groups (GWG) will focus on general discussions related to teaching astronomy in Europe.
Workshops (WS) will be held in small groups (20 participants). The objective of WS is to offer teachers very practical and didactic presentations presented by EAAE members.
Observation sessions (OS) can be held during the Summer School depending on the weather. The goal is to introduce the participants to all types of astronomical observations. The course will offer participants a special observation using IAA facilities (Instituto Astrofísico de Andalucia in Calar Alto, Granada).
Poster session (PS) will be organised, to which participants are invited to contribute by presenting posters of particular astronomical activities. Participants interested in presenting a poster should send an English summary (max. 200 words) to Rosa M. Ros by e-mail (ros@ma4.upc.edu) with the registration form. The posters will be presented during the Summer School in English.
Evaluation Session (ES) of different activities will take place at the end of the Summer School. There will be a chance to make comments on the course contents in a general discussion.

This year the ESO-EAAE Summer School is a COMENIUS-GRUNDTVIG course. The title of the course is "Teaching Astronomy at the beginning of the 21st century" and the code is "ES-2008-179-001". Teachers interested can apply to their National Socrates Agencies according to the Socrates rules.
You can find here the pre-registration form
Teachers interested in participating, but who can not apply for a Socrates grant (because they do not meet the Socrates requirements), should contact ros@mat.upc.edu
