At ISN, as in all Swedish schools, there is the opportunity for children to working or studying parents to enjoy childcare. The childcare staff welcome children from 07.00h and offer activities until closing facilities at 18.00h. Childcare facilities are available every day except national holidays and occasional in-service days for staff. During the time that pupils are in a school the childcare staff assist in classes and in so doing gain insight into the child’s whole personality, social skills and academic progress. The childcare staff are trained in social and recreational pedagogics.

The service is not covered by school financing but is a fee demanding service whereby families must fulfil conditions set by the municipality of residence. Fees levied vary from municipality to municipality. In Nacka kommun residents pay a monthly fee according to the number of hours of childcare required per week. A contract is signed by the parents and a representative of the school.The invoicing is administered by a separate unit within the local municipal civil service.

Changes to the number of contracted childcare hours can be made with one months notice and the annulment of a childcare placement requires two months notice. The fees for children in pre-school age childcare are slightly higher than those for children in compulsory school. Children in pre-school have less classroom time. Fee based childcare is for children up to the age of ten or to the end of class three which ever is to the advantage of the child. Exemption from rulings for an extension of childcare above the norm can be granted under special circumstances. Children with special needs can be granted childcare even if the family do not fulfil the conditions for subsidised childcare.

Childcare can be bought privately, the fee for which is the total sum for the number of hours required.

The staff at ISN engage the children in indoor and outdoor activities that assist in the development of motor and social skills. The activities are a complement to the strivings of the home and the school to foster wellbalanced and healthy individuals.
