Curriculum of the Pre-School Class

Within the framework of the Swedish National Curriculum
the pre-school class shall strive for each child to experience security, to develop self confidence, be considerate, show respect for other people, create a stimulating place of learning and facilitate independent and group learning.

We inquire into  the following themes:

  Who we are
Where we are in time and place
  How we express ourselves
  How the world works
  How we organise ourselves
  Sharing the planet

Objectives
Learning should be viewed as a process where play and creativity reinforce and further the child’s search for answers to questions raised by itself and by the group. Pre-school is a preparatory step to school enrolment.

Each student will have an individual development plan that is evaluated and where progress is documented. The starting point is always related to the individual in question and specific and special conditions that may prevail.

How we work
Pre-schoolers at ISN are not within the walls of a classroom all day but enjoy creative play both indoors and outdoors. Besides theme work students will enjoy specific skill enhancing activities in mathematics, language arts and crafts and art. During the school day importance is given to play, personal identity and group awareness development.

The speciality for pre-schoolers at ISN is that they enjoy the well established and successful conditions of Swedish pre-school education with the ties to the three dominant learning areas of culture, environment and nature. Swedes are well known for their love of nature and care for the environment. These attributes are carefully nurtured in children from a very early age as is an interest in culture, preferably a participatory and not a consumer attitude is fostered. Learning through play and dialogue are important aspects of preschool education at ISN. Within the Swedish form of pre-school education care is considered as part of the pedagogical model. The caring aspect is continued into learning situations as all that the teacher does, says and models are of importance in facilitating successful learning.

Consequently pre-schoolers at ISN are active in their learning be it indoors or outdoors:
• at school or in a museum
• in a gym or in the forest
• alone with a book or together in a circle sitting down.

(Remember that weather is generally experienced as being adverse if clothing in use is unsuitable for the prevailing conditions: ‘right togs at the right time`).
